How To Care For Your Dissecting Kit

Dissection equipment should be cleaned thoroughly and quickly after use to prevent the spread

of disease and to maintain the integrity of the equipment.

Steps to take

Rinse off any visible debris from the equipment with tap water.

Use a mild detergent and warm water to scrub the equipment, paying particular attention to any

crevices or hard-to-reach areas.

Rinse the equipment thoroughly with tap water to remove any soap residue.

Disinfect the equipment by soaking it in a solution of 1 part Milton’s solution to 10 parts water

for at least 10 minutes.

Rinse the equipment again with tap water to remove any sterilising residue.

Allow the equipment to air dry or pat it dry with a clean tea towel before storing it.

Dry them completely to prevent rust.

To keep the hinges of scissors and forceps moving smoothly, occasionally apply a drop of medical-grade lubricant or a light spray (like WD-40)

It is important to use caution when handling and cleaning dissection equipment, as some materials may be sharp or hazardous.

Wear protective gloves and follow all safety guidelines when handling and cleaning dissection equipment

To maximize the lifespan of your dissection kit, immediately remove and dispose of used scalpel blades in a sharps container, as scalpels are not designed for reuse.
